Welcome to the Maths page.
Maths at Sandylands is led by Mr Goulds. He has an extensive background in the development of Primary Maths. Having been Maths subject lead in two previous schools, he is guiding us on our journey to becoming a Mastery school. Mr Goulds also has a background in staff development and has created and worked within networks of schools to develop staff in the most effective ways of delivering and assessing Maths in our school. He draws upon his experience, knowledge and his external study of a Masters in Primary Maths Specialist Practice to bring about a high standard of Maths teaching across our school, from Nursery up to Year 6.

Our Maths curriculum …
Deliver maths in a ‘child focussed’ way using a well-planned, sequenced structure that uses the core principles of the MNP mastery approach to cover National Curriculum objectives.
Represent mathematical concepts and problems when teaching them using a variety of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, using real-life examples frequently.
Have a strong focus on building arithmetic, known facts and number skills in children through direct teaching and guided practice.
Use working walls effectively to support children’s retention of learning through constantly re-visiting what they have learnt.
To teach and model the use of mathematical vocabulary and show its importance in children’s daily lives.
To offer children the chance to be inspired to follow Maths-based career pathways through enhanced enrichment opportunities.
Use explorative and investigative teaching methods to ensure children develop a strong mathematical curiosity and are equipped with valuable strategies to solve problems using inductive and deductive reasoning.
Use a cross-curricular approach to the teaching of mathematics, such as looking at comparisons between coastal towns in Upper Key Stage Two, as well as using digital measuring tools to measure distance and landmass in Geography.
To draw on the skills of the local community to allow children the opportunity to analyse and solve problems in a real-world context.
Appreciate the local, national and global dimensions of mathematics and teach about its cultural and historical importance.

Maths Learning Pathway
Concrete Resources – using a variety of equipment to represent our Maths and using it to solve problems.
Representations – using drawings, figures and images to help us to understand the Maths in front of us and using it to support out learning.
Key knowledge: Knowing and recalling key facts, such as number bonds to 10, 20 and 100.
Recall: Knowing and recalling times tables fluently.
Mathematics is taught for around 45 to 60 minutes every day. Each class will have a separate 10–15-minute arithmetic session each day. From Year 2 upwards, children will begin to master their times tables with a 5–10-minute session each day.
Assessment in Maths happens in a variety of ways. This may be from simply answering a question or using some equipment to solve an equation, to answering complex problems and tasks towards the end of a lesson using our Sandylands checkpoints. Each block of learning will see children complete a ‘Review’ task (Checkpoint 3) and a formal assessment will take place from Year 2 onwards around once per term (Checkpoint 4).
CPD for teachers
Our staff are continually learning too! Mr Goulds runs training sessions with all staff including teaching assistants as well as with individual year groups. We also draw on external colleagues from a variety of different organisations, who offer valuable support and insight into our teaching of Maths – the Sandylands way.
We have been creating patterns using 2D shapes and sorting shapes into different categories in Maths. We have also had fun linking our Computing lessons with Maths. We used the camera app to take photos of 2D and 3D shapes around our school building.
We had some shape detectives in Year 2 as we sorted 2-D and 3-D shapes using Venn diagrams. We looked at the number of edges, sides and vertices that a shape had, what the face of the shape looked like or what type of shape it was.We even included real life shapes...
Lots of hands on investigations for our Year 2’s, they have been using different equipment to aid their understanding of measurements. This week we focused on balancing weights and converting grams into kilograms
Year One have been learning all about money and the value of coins. We have been using addition and subtraction skills to make amounts and to solve money problems.
