Science
States of Matter
KKQ / Key skills ? Key Knowledge
This week we are going to …
1. Investigate the process of evaporation and carry out an investigation to see if evaporation is faster in warmer conditions.
2. Observe how the level of water changes over time when it is left on a window sill.
Key Vocabulary Solid, liquid, gas, state, matter, heat, cold, liquid, evaporation, evaporate, gas, tiny particles
Learning Activity Watch the video – click on the link https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87h/articles/zydxmnb
Evaporation – is the process by which water changes from a liquid into a gas or vapor.
Water changes from a liquid to a gas when it is heated, e.g. a puddle of water is heated by the sun and evaporates (dries up), into the air as a gas.
Activity one: An investigation to find out if evaporation is faster in warmer conditions.
You will need:
Paper towel/kitchen roll or similar
Water
What you will do:
1. Make a wet handprint on the paper towel and discuss the following questions with a member of your family.
• What do you notice about the shape/size of the print?
• What happened to the paper?
• Did the handprint disappear ?
• Why did the handprint dry up?
• Where did the water go?
2. The water will dry up and go into the air. The water has changed from a liquid to a gas. This process is called ‘evaporation’.
3. Think about ways you can make the hand print evaporate more quickly or last longer.
4. Make 3 or 4 more paper towel handprints and place them in different places, e.g. a cold place like the fridge – ask permission first. Outside on the washing line, in a cupboard, on a radiator
5. Time how long it takes each hand print to evaporate.
6. Make a poster/chart to show your results.
7. Write an explanation of what you found out, e.g. The paper towel handprint in the _________ , evaporated the fastest.
This is because……….
The paper towel handprint in the ________
Took the longest time to evaporate.
This is because……………….
Challenge – 1. Put some water in a container and mark the water level.
2. Put the same amount of water in a second container of the same size and put a teaspoon of salt in it.
3.Place both the containers on the window sill and check them each day.
4. What do you notice about the water level?
5. Compare the salt water level to the plain water level, is there any difference?
6. After a week record what you have found out.
