Activity 1 Pre teach: think about this vocabulary – throngs, distorted, dominate. Can you look up these words and find the meanings. Read chapter 10 of Coming to England and think about the main points.
Written responses: WORD MEANING: Which word means the same as ‘elated’? Tick one. (1 mark)
INFER: Why does Floella feel disappointed when they reach their new home? (2 marks)
Activity 2 Pre teach: think about this vocabulary – dingy, parquet. Can you look up these words and find the meanings? Listen to chapter 11 of Coming to England and think about the main points. INFER: Why was it too dangerous to play outside? (2 marks) RETRIEVE: What were the children allowed to do on one of the few occasions they were allowed outside? (1 mark)
Activity 3 Written response: Describe the similarities and differences between life in Trinidad and life in England. How did Floella overcome her difficulties?
